Consumer-driven Health Plans (CDHPs)
They're changing how we manage our healthcare!  (And helping reduce costs, too!)

In 2010, the number of individuals enrolled in consumer-driven health plans (like HSAs and HRAs) reached 22 million!  That’s the result of a recent study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI).

Members are Budget-Minded: EBRI also found CDHP members were more likely than those with traditional coverage to display many cost-conscious behaviors, including checking to see what their plan covered, requesting generic drugs instead of brand names, and checking prices before getting care.

Members are Wellness Participants: CDHP enrollees were also more likely than traditional plan members to take advantage of health promotion programs.  In addition, adults in CDHPS were significantly less likely to smoke than those in traditional plans, and they were less likely to be obese.

Members are Educated: In the past, CDHP enrollees were much more likely to have a high household income, but those income differences were not present in 2010.  However, high deductible and consumer directed health plan members were more likely to be highly educated.
