Tom began his career in employee benefits as a Group Sales Representative with Northwestern National Life (Voya) and spent most of his four years in Washington D.C. selling and servicing self-funded Taft-Hartley health plans. He later joined Guardian Life Insurance Company, where for the next fourteen plus years, was Regional Group Manager of their Minneapolis Office. After his time at Guardian, Tom was recruited to lead the Large Group Sales Team at HealthPartners. He had responsibility for the sales and renewal of their commercial large group medical business, written through agents and brokers. In 1998, he started his own employee benefits agency - Aslesen Benefit Resources, Inc. After two years he initiated a merger with a similar size benefits firm, creating Accord Benefit Resources, Inc.
Accord Benefit Resources grew significantly for sixteen years by providing trusted advice and service to over 100 corporate clients. Each of these clients had unique needs requiring creative solutions. In 2016, Accord Benefit Resources was acquired by Arthur J. Gallagher, Inc. His remained at Gallagher as an Area Vice President until creating his own firm – again - in 2020. Through a mutually beneficial partnership, Aslesen Benefit Resources, Inc. and Sailer Benefit Services, Inc. have created a client-driven model to better serve clients.
Tom has been a member of both the National Association (NAHU) and Minnesota Association (MAHU) of Health Underwriters since 1985. Tom served as the Board Chair and Past President of the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Association of Health Underwriters. His responsibilities included strategic oversight of various health care initiatives including legislative efforts of MAHU. Tom was Co-Chair of the Legislative Committee and received the 2011 John J. Symanitz Award for his career contributions to the health care industry in Minnesota. Tom was selected to serve in 2010 on the Small Group Health Insurance Market Working Group, part of the Minnesota Health Care Access Commission, created to provide research to the Minnesota State Legislature. He is also charter member of the Professional Resource Group.
Tom has been married to Barb for 40 years and has four children – Eric (Nicole), Luke (Rachel), Hannah and Charlie. For over four decades, Tom and his children have served, alongside Barb, (the founder of Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels, Inc.) helping to feed over 18,000 needy families in the Twin Cities on Thanksgiving. Tom and Barb have enjoyed encouraging their family to honor God in ministries involving the poor and homeless in the Twin Cities. Tom’s favorite activities are spending summer weekends at the lake with his family and studying God’s Word. A rewarding experience has also been the privilege of serving on three non-profit boards in recent years.
Tom believes employee benefit professionals must always provide trusted and valuable knowledge to clients. His focus is bringing value; wisdom and creative solutions to his clients, as they navigate the complex employee benefits marketplace. Integrity, trust and professionalism are core values provided to his clients, vendors and partners.
